The Tuscarora girls’ cross country team placed seven runners in the top 15 and breezed through the Group 5A Conference 14 XC Championships along with the boys on their home course, Morven Park, on Wednesday, October 29.

Boys placed 5 runners in the top 23 with junior Fitsum Seyoum winning the race with a time of 15:47, breaking his personal record (15:54). Broad Run senior Ethan Newland placed 2nd with a time of 15:54. Seyoum’s teammate, junior Jarred Silverman, finished 9th with 16:13.

Other boys’ runners who competed were seniors Kobe Robinson (16:21, 12th) and Clayton Smith (17:01, 21st), along with sophomore Miles Spence (17:09, 23rd).

The boys team placed 2nd in the Championships with 66 points, averaging a time of 16:30. Broad Run took the race placing 1st with 65 points, averaging 16:31.

“We really put our best feet forward, pun intended,” said Smith, who also broke his personal record. “We put forth all of our effort; gaining the position of 2nd along with the girls who placed 1st. We’re definitely going onto Regionals and we’ll continue to succeed throughout the post-season. I expect to go to states.”

Girls dominated their division placing 1st with 24 points averaging 19:11.

“I did really well individually. I definitely exceeded my expectations,” said senior Anna Wasko. Wasko placed 3rd in the competition with a time of 18:32. “I was able to stick with a girl that was normally almost a minute ahead of me, so doing that was incredible and getting a season PR [Personal Record] was also really exciting. The team did absolutely incredible; we had all 7 runners place in the top 15 which has never been done by any school [in the county]. 6 of our runners also ran under 20 minutes which was also incredible. We’re going to use this to keep motivating us and pushing us to succeed in the rest of the season.”

Among the girls placing the top 15 were juniors Rosemary Kostka (19:42, 5th), Gillian King (19:46, 6th), Ray Al-Nsour (19:54, 9th), Madeline Lazorchak (20:14, 15th) and freshman Nicole Fitz (19:59, 10th).
