Xiaomi Announces Air Charging for Mobile Devices

Xiaomi Announces Air Charging for Mobile Devices

By — Danny Kistner

Xiaomi, a Chinese tech powerhouse responsible for a wide range of electronic products, has just announced Mi Air Charge Technology, which allows users to charge their phones and other mobile devices entirely without cables or charging stands. From several meters away, phones and other such devices, through the air, and allows them to charge. The charging, they claim, can be done both with multiple devices, while in use, and even through other objects.

Made from 144 antennas, they emit energy through an extremely narrow beam, which then reaches and charges your device. Each beam, so to speak, emits 5W of energy, comparable to Apple’s magsafe “wireless” charger which charges at 20W. That said, to have this power, if only a fourth of it, emitted through the air, is quite the feat. Xiaomi states that they hope for the future of rooms to be totally wireless. Desk lamps or speakers for example, wouldn’t have to be plugged in at all, simply connected to the Mi Air Charge.
