I asked my cousin if he had seen the Minecraft movie. He said he had seen it twice. When I asked him if it was any good, he laughed. This seems to be the way of things for “A Minecraft Movie,” which premiered in theaters on April 4, 2025, and quickly laughed its way up to being the #1 video game adaptation movie in terms of profit. According to MSN, it attained “an astonishing $163m (£128m) in its first weekend at the North American box office,” surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” by nearly $20 million. Its success is due to the numerous spectators (Minecraft fans and non-Minecraft fans alike) who looked at the trailers as a joke, and the movie as the punchline.
There was no question as to whether or not “A Minecraft Movie” was going to be a good film or not. The weird, fuzzy pink sheep in the trailer, paired with Minecraft’s iconic character, Steve, played by Jack Black (which is completely unrealistic, even for Minecraft), told everyone what they needed to know about the movie. “As someone who’s played a lot of Minecraft, I felt obligated to see the movie, especially since I thought it would be so bad that it was funny,” Ethan Edwards, a senior at Tuscarora High School, explains.
Edwards only watched a few trailers for the film, wanting to go into the movie blind. After seeing the movie, he discloses, “The plot was abysmal, along with some pacing. It was only entertaining for the absolute absurdity of it.”
Jenna Gould, a senior at Tuscarora movie, also watched “A Minecraft Movie” in theaters. “It was incredibly entertaining,” she says. “Good? Questionable. Entertaining? Absolutely.”
“A Minecraft Movie” not only made history in terms of the largest box office for a video game film, but some moviegoers’ experiences were interrupted by others throwing food during the movie’s supposed “iconic scenes.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, someone even brought a live chicken to the theaters. This disgraceful behaviour only further highlights the absurd nature of the film; “A Minecraft Movie” exists to be the butt end of a joke.
Rumors are speculating about “A Minecraft Movie 2” set to release in 2028. According to CBR, Warner Bros. confirmed that they plan on making a sequel. Will it garner the same profit, or did the first movie exhaust its audience with the franchise? Edwards, at least, plans on seeing it. “It would be fun to joke about it with my friends again.”
We can only hope that it won’t involve chickens for the sake of all theater workers.
