Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the new show on Netflix called Squid Game by now. Squid Game has ranked at number one for the top 10 in the U.S today.
This South Korean horror and drama series is about desperately impoverished people who are enticed to compete in children’s games , with deadly high stakes all for the chance to win a life-changing cash prize. Since its release on Netflix on September 17th, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, leading to meme’s onTikTok, several theories, and also holds the place of the number one streamed show across 70 countries.
This show was said to have received no press but only word-of-mouth marketing including many distraught viewers telling others not to watch it. Typically when one is told not to do something such as watch a show, they are more likely to be enticed and end up doing the very thing they were told not to do.
Squid Games was described by many viewers as an emotional show which was also said to be a tear-jerker for the vast majority of the audience. It is also said to stay at the top of pop culture conversations as long as people continue to promote the show by word-of-mouth.
The protagonist, Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-Jae), is a divorced father who is also a misfortune and unlucky degenerate gambler who lives with his elderly mother and steals money from her sometimes just to make ends meet. After having one of his many unfortunate days, Gi-Hun is approached on the subway by a well-dressed man who offers him the chance to win money by playing children’s games. After Gi-hun accepts the offer he is then gassed, kidnapped, and swept away to a desert island, where he awakes in a dormitory with 455 other players.
