Tuscarora and Heritage fans came together on Thursday, September 19th for the 4th annual Dig Pink volleyball game to raise awareness for breast cancer. In the end, the varsity Huskies protected their winning streak by defeating Heritage in three sets.

The 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 result was the seventh straight win for the Huskies this season. Junior Alexis Coombs got 17 kills on 32 attempts, 7 digs, and 2 blocks. Aiding Coombs were seniors Claudia Le Maitre with 24 digs and 35 service receptions and Julia Walsh with 36 assists on 89 sets.

“They played great,” said sophomore Peter Le Maitre, brother of Claudia Le Maitre. “They kept their composure whenever things went wrong for them, and they always brought it back…so they went up and swept the floor against Heritage.”

The Dig Pink volleyball game differs from normal volleyball games because its purpose is to support the study of breast cancer by raising awareness. All proceeds made during the event are used by the Side-Out foundation to help make a difference in the lives of people who have been affected by breast cancer.

“I think it’s fabulous. I know on our side we have sold [Dig Pink t-shirts] continuously for the past three weeks at lunch to our student body…they spend the money for the cause and for everybody to celebrate it. I don’t think there’s a better way to play a game,” said Dawn Bracken, the head JV volleyball coach.

Head varsity volleyball coach Meghan Puckili also discussed the importance of supporting the study of breast cancer, saying, “I think it’s great. I think it’s something that most teams do in this county because it’s so good, and it’s nice that we have two rival schools fighting together to be able to raise so much money for breast cancer research.”

In the end, despite being rivals, both Tuscarora and Heritage battled for a greater movement. Even though this was a big win for the team, it was only one and, hopefully, the first of many.
