This year, Science National Honor Society hosted a food drive to gather nonperishable Thanksgiving-themed food to donate. They donated to Loudoun Hunger Relief, who assists people that may not be able to put food on their family’s plates. This food drive ensures that some of these people will be able to have a Thanksgiving meal and celebrate the holiday with their family.
SNHS started by decorating boxes as turkeys and putting them in classrooms to start collecting food. Students from around the school donated food by placing their cans into these bins. “Everytime I walked into class, there was more food in the box,” says Elaina Neumiller, the decorator of the donation bins. Volunteers from Tuscarora then organized the canned food into categories. They made a list for the organization, and placed them into separate bags to put into large cardboard boxes. Luke Fincham, a senior who assisted with sorting and bagging, says, “I got to spend time with friends and have fun organizing, bagging, and carrying food to the car. I also felt an extremely large amount of pride in ensuring that the mission of no children going hungry on Thanksgiving takes more steps toward the goal.” The students carried the boxes into Dannenberg’s car, and she drove them to Loudoun Hunger Relief. The food is now in the hands of the organizations, and they will distribute it to families in need on Thanksgiving.
The students who donated feel happy that they are making a difference. Jasmine Argueta, a member of SNHS, donated food. “I am happy that I donated food, because it means that someone doesn’t have to go to bed hungry on Thanksgiving, and that people can enjoy the holiday instead of worrying about how they are going to put food on the table.” The food drive was a huge success, and the students at Tuscarora High School are bringing their vision of helping their community to life.
