Husky Reads is Tuscarora’s very own book club. Led by Ms. Pellicano, one of the school’s librarians, the Book Club is open to anyone who wants to meet and share their favorite book. Ms. Pellicano wishes that the club would have, “more student involvement,” as well as to, “inspire [students] to read more.” The club is supposed to be an environment where students can share their books and talk to each other about what types of book they like and why.
There are so many genres to be read, and the clubs cover them all. The months and genres are the following: October-Scary, November- Historical, December- Fantasy, January- Realistic Fiction, February- Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), March- Mystery and suspense, April- poetry/verse, and May- Free choice. When asked for the latest books students have read, Pellicano’s response went along the lines of Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Just Listen by Sarah Dessen, and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.
There is no structured membership, so anyone can join at any time, which is good if you don’t want to talk about mystery books but you like realistic fiction. You can go with your friends and meet some new people while you’re at it. 4 in 10 students said that they did not know what Husky Reads is, but the good thing is that 1 in 10 students said they would in fact like to share their favorite stories and talk about the characters they like. This shows that students do enjoy reading and talking about the characters that they get to know throughout the book, or series.
The club meets twice a month ,on the 1st A & B day, in the library during all lunch shifts. They make sure that every student gets a chance to speak and share. The club is very helpful because some students might not like to pick up a book, but leading them to it might make a big difference.
