GSA Hosts Gift Basket Raffle

By Hanna Duenkel

On the week of February 9-13th, Tuscarora’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) held it’s annual gift basket raffle, offering baskets with movie, mystery, and Valentine’s Day themes.  Members of the GSA were set up at Tuscarora’s front doors, selling tickets in the morning period before classes started.  Tickets sold for $1 each or $5 for 7 tickets, and began to fill the raffle boxes quickly.  Overall, the movie themed basket gained the most tickets of the available prizes.

Tuscarora’s chapter of the GSA has been around for 2 years and the club has done the raffle since it’s conception.  They use the raffle as a way to promote the Trevor Project and LGBT rights as well as raise funds for the club.

“75% of the profits from [the raffle] are donated to the Trevor Fund, which is an anti-bullying organization that focuses on LGBT people,” said senior Evan Robohm, member of the GSA.

The winners of the raffle were chosen at 9 a.m. on Friday, February 13th, and their prizes were delivered during FLEX 8.  Some of the winners of the baskets were administrators, students, and club members of the GSA.

The gift basket raffle is not the first annual event hosted by the GSA; they also hosted the “Duct Tape a Teacher” event in December, which has become an annual fundraiser.
