Diamonds in da Burg: Tastier than any five dollar footlong

By: Dominic Gavan

Leesburg is a town filled with many things, such as senior citizens, numerous antique stores, and a downtown deader than the Old West after 5 p.m. If you are a teenager, however, you can always find some diamonds in da Burg. These diamonds are places that people don’t just know, they treasure. Every other week I will highlight a diamond so unique that I have to shine the brightness on our school.

Let’s say you’re hanging with your friends and subs are what you’re craving. Don’t go for Subway or Quiznos, but rather a diamond. This specific diamond goes by the name of Deli South. Their sandwiches are top notch; sadly, their location is not. In a world where you see a commercial and expect the sandwich to look identical in the store, Deli South goes against the grain.
The sheer number of toppings never fails to disappoint. Deli South sandwiches are packed with enough meat to feed your and your two closest friends. They have an option to make your own sandwich, but what really makes this diamond shine bright is their “Heroes” menu. The Scarlett O’Hara is truly one of the most satisfying cheese steaks I’ve ever had. It is homage to Philly cheesesteaks everywhere; however, it magnifies everything you taste by 10 fold. All of the toppings just combine so well that it will make you shy away from your favorite chain place. The appeal of fast food chains don’t even apply to this family owned shop. It’s tucked away in a strip mall on Catoctin Circle, where the most visited store is Ben Franklin. Needless to say, it is not noticed by any passersby. Once you enter the store, you’ll immediately gravitate to the bread and cheese on display. Instead of being laid out in metal tins, toppings are sitting in a glass refrigerated window. The “Hero” sub sandwiches are all priced for less than 8 dollars for 8 inches of heaven. To put the icing on this diamond, Deli South has several homemade sides readily available. The address of this shop is: Deli South 38 Catoctin Cir. SE #D, Leesburg, VA 20175. It is easily noticed by having two burnt out letters in The Deli South sign.
